When Is Good Enough?

It’s time to stop the never ending drive to great.

When I was younger, an old management classic by Tom Peters, In Search of Excellence, was how I modeled my career and life. It is an excellent philosophy and, in many ways, is still a great book of its time. But when is good enough?

Sorry but I don’t have an exact answer for you. I do, however, have several suggestions that may bring you to the brink of madness without having you cross that line to great. Assuming that good is acceptable.

I mostly want to always be making improvements in my life. That is the philosophy by which I live.

My tagline is, The Optimal Life, It’s Not Perfect, Just Better.

The reality is, I’m comfortable. I am content with my current lifestyle, income, revenue streams, relationships, health, and so on. I grasp and somewhat embrace the Sino-Japanese word, Kaizen, which means continuous improvement. There is real merit for Kaizen in the manufacturing process for which it is intended, but for life. I’m not so sure.

Well, ok, I guess I am sure. I would not want to be forever trying to improve every aspect of my life as that would remove the enjoyment. Many times, great is not necessary.
